The Different Types of Dental Crowns

A dental crown is a prosthetic device used to restore the function and appearance of a damaged or decayed tooth. A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that covers the entire visible portion of the tooth above the gum line. Crowns are usually made of metal, porcelain, or both materials. At Robinson Family Dentistry, crowns are used when a tooth has been damaged or decayed to the point that a filling won’t solve the problem. They also cover dental implants, attach bridges, and cover discolored teeth.

The Procedure for Dental Crowns

First, your dentist will numb the area with a local anesthetic. Then, they will prepare the tooth for the crown by reshaping it. Next, the dentist will take an impression of the tooth, which will be sent to a lab where the crown will be fabricated. Until your permanent crown is ready, a temporary crown will be placed over the tooth. Once the permanent crown arrives, the temporary one will be removed, and the permanent crown will be cemented.

Types of Dental Crowns

Metal Crowns

These crowns are made of gold alloy or base metal alloys and are very durable. They can withstand chewing forces well and last for many years. However, they are noticeable because of their metallic color.

Porcelain-Fused-To-Metal Crowns

These are similar to metal crowns but have a porcelain layer over the metal base. The porcelain matches the color of your natural teeth, so these crowns blend in better with your smile.

All-Porcelain Crowns

These crowns are made entirely of ceramic material. They are the most natural-looking option but less durable than metal crowns.

Gold Crowns

Gold crowns, also known as gold alloy crowns or gold caps, are a type of dental crown made from a mixture of gold and other metals, such as silver, palladium, and copper. Gold has been used in dentistry for many years due to its exceptional properties, making it an excellent choice for certain dental restorations, including crowns.

All-Resin Crowns

These crowns are less expensive than other types of crowns, but they are less robust. They can wear down over time and may need to be replaced more frequently.

Zirconia Crowns

Zirconia crowns are a type of all-ceramic crown that is highly durable and long-lasting. They are made of zirconium oxide, a white powder mixed with other metals to create a strong and durable ceramic material. Zirconia crowns are biocompatible, non-toxic, and will not cause an allergic reaction. They are also solid and can withstand much wear and tear.

Dental crowns are versatile and effective dental restorations, providing long-lasting results and preserving the beauty and functionality of your smile!
